These 20 Cartoons Show That Getting Older Has Many Funny Moments

Let me introduce you to an unbelievably amazing woman who not only spent the later years of her life but with a new talent she had wonderfully enriched the lives of so many. She never thought she would become a cartoonist, especially not one that all of a sudden has such an effect on people of all ages. The story of how she has used unexpected creativity and chance events to create 20 funny cartoons over the age of 50 is one of life’s quirky moments, discovering something new to do a little later on.

Old Lady Jokes

The artist was of her generation. She grew up in her small town, helping out the house and going to a low grade local school. She was known for quick wit, and if you didn’t know up here, she had an excellent sense of humor…even in the most mundane situations she would find ways to make people laugh. But she never viewed herself as an especially artistic person and hadn’t had any formal art training. Instead, her life incorporated family, homemaking and raising her children.

Her kids grew up and went off when they did, and now she had more time. She had quieter days, and began looking for things to do. Her grandchildren, however, gave her a tablet for her 70th birthday. Martha was far from a tech-savvy so the idea was to use it to keep her in touch with family and friends. At first the device felt more like a burden than a blessing, trying to learn to maneuver a world full of apps and notifications.

By accident one day Martha opened a drawing app on the tablet. She started to doodle and was frustrated and didn’t know what to do with it. Her first few drawings were rough, but as she played around with the app, something remarkable happened: The cartoons began to come pouring out. Her first comic was of her searching for her reading glasses (which were on top of her head). When she showed the thing to her family, they laughed hysterically, and told her to keep drawing.

This started out as some simple sketches and before long it became a pastime. Martha found herself able to express herself best when she was able to capture life’s more mundane irritations, and of course the humor that comes with it and especially as one grows older. Most of her cartoons were based on a day-to-day life event like losing things, using gadgets, or talking with friends about forgetfulness. She shared her humor with her family and started to create a whole series of cartoons related to the peculiarities of the aging process.
